The Aircrash No-One Saw – Djouce Mountain August 1946

This talk by historian James Scannell looks at ‘The Air Crash No-One Saw – Djouce Mountain 1946’. It’s the story of a French plane with French girl guides that crashed close to the summit of Djouce in the Wicklow mountains eighty years ago in awful conditions. The crash went unreported until the pilot and two of the leaders came down the mountain and alerted the authorities to their plight after which a massive rescue operation was mounted. There were no fatalities but many of the guides sustained serious injuries. The last surviving member of the group died in November last year.
Historian James Scannell will give the background to this crash, the weather conditions, the lack of preparation, the skill and reactions of the pilot, and the sheer luck that saved the lives of all of those on board.. Don’t miss this fascinating afternoon!
